HEALTHY EATING
H
ealthy eating is a vital part of good health. After all, the major causes of death in Australia, heart disease, stroke, certain cancers, non-insulin dependant diabetes and obesity, are all associated with the food we eat. Calisthenics Victoria acknowledges that healthy eating can have an impact on our health and that the provision of healthy foods will contribute to better health for all. CVI is committed to enusring a healthy envionment for all those associated with our organisation and will ensure that:
  • All CVI competitions will promote healthy food choices.
  • Caterers used for all events / activities must be able to provide a variety of healthy food choices at competitive prices.
  • That healthy food choices will be available at all competitions, functions, meetings and activities where food is provided.
  • Promotion of the enjoyment of healthy eating and the role of food in relation to health.
  • That healthy food choices will be displayed more prominently than other foods.
SMOKEFREE POLICY
Every registered Calisthenic Club in Victoria has signed an agreement with CVI to promote and abide by CVI's Smokefree Policy. CVI recognises that not only is environmental tobacco smoke hazardous to the health of non-smokers, it deems that Club Coaches, officials and senior members of Clubs, should be aware that they are role models to junior members. Briefly, the policy states:
  • All Club facilities should be 100% smokefree.
  • Clubs should provide a smoking area outside their facility, away from view of the facility.
  • All official Club functions (including dinners, fund-raising events, meetings and social occassions), should be 100% smokefree.
  • All club members and volunteers should refrain from smoking whilst acting in an official capacity.
  • Club members should refrain from smoking whilst in Club uniform.
  • Club Coaches will refrain from smoking whilst acting in an official capacity.
STRENGTH, WARM-UP & FLEXIBILITY
As each year passes, Calisthenics demands greater speed in the execution of movements and a greater degree of flexibility. Without the required strength in the limbs, many of the gymnastic movements cannot be physically executed, therefore, the first step is to build the required strength and flexibility to minimise running the risk of injury. To do this, pupils must ensure that they participate in a warm-up session before each practice or performance no matter what age the pupil.
A Warm up and Strengthening video and manual has been produced to assist pupils with their regular warm up, strength and stretch routine. This video will assist pupils with their flexibility and muscle control and is available from the C.V.I. office.
Calisthenics is aimed at improving health and fitness. All coaches are accredited with the Australian Sports Commission. Sports injury prevention information is provided to all clubs and pupils on a regular basis, via the C.V.I. Clublink newsletter, by Physiotherapist Jean Leaf (B.App Sc phty, M.A.P.A. Grad. TEACHING ADVANCED CALISTHENIC MOVEMENTS
Even when you can't do them yourself

Introduction
This is a valuable resource for Coaches to help their pupils quickly and safely develop the skill of advanced calisthenic movements such as walkovers, cartwheels, tiger-stands, headrest stands and valdez.

It identifies:
    •  The muscles that need to be strengthened in order to execute the movements      safely
    •  Strengthening exercises for those muscles
    •  Correct execution and progression techniques
    •  Helpful hints in coaching the momentum

Target group
For use by Coaches
This resource has been designed for qualified Coaches

For use by parents
This manual is not a self help manual for parents or participants. Pupils should not attempt these movements without the supervision of a qualified Coach as the pupil's safety can be at risk. The Coach however will set development exercises that can be practised between coaching sessions once the development opportunities have been assessed for the individual pupil. The diagrams will provide helpful and clear illustrations of positions and progressions of the movements.

Funding
CVI received development funding for this project from the Australian Calisthenic Federation. States which host the National competitions are eligible to retain one-third of the profits for development projects. This project has been funded from the ACF National competitions which were held in Melbourne in 2005.
