GRADING OF SOLO COMPETITORS
Have you ever wondered how soloists are graded? Many incorrect versions surface
every year, causing confusion and great angst. Perhaps the following explanation will dispel these myths! It covers all Solo
competitors except those competing in the "17 Years & Over Graceful Solo". Their criteria is outlined separately.
GENERAL GRADING CRITERIA
♦ All competitors starting
solos enter as Novice competitors. ♦ If they have a successful year and gain at least 10
points (based on the aggregate point system used for Team competitions), they move into the Open section.
Each year, members of the CVI Grading Committee review the results of all Open competitors who have
been in the Open section for at least 2 years. ♦ Any Open competitor who has not gained
any significant placings e.g. Firsts, Seconds or Thirds in the previous 2 years, may be moved back to the Novice
section. Sometimes these competitors have simply given up solos, or may have moved from a Calisthenic Solo to a Graceful
Solo or Duo. Any exceptional circumstances e.g. illness or injury etc, would be taken into consideration when reviewing
these Open gradings.
♦ Any competitors who want to re-enter Solo competitions after
a minimum of 2 years absence, must apply to CVI Grading Committee for a new Grading. If they have been very successful
competitors in the Open section in previous years, they may be reinstated as Open competitors,
otherwise they go back to the Novice section.
2010 CHANGES FOR SOLO
GRADINGS Following a review of the growing Solo Competitions, the following
changes will come into effect in 2010. ♦ To increase the number of "Open" competitors in the 9
years Calisthenic Solo and 12 Years Graceful Solo sections, a minimum of 10 competitors from the 2009 "Novice" 8
Years Calisthenic Solo and 11 Years Graceful Solo will move into the "Open" section in 2010. The placings gained
at competitions in 2009, will determine the competitors to be moved into "Open". In all other age groups, competitors
will be graded in accordance with the general grading criteria above. ♦ The above change will reduce the number
of small sections where "a minimum of 2 competitors must remain unplaced". With so many solo competitions on offer,
it may not eliminate every small section, so please remember - it is competition and all competitors should not expect to
be placed. ♦ If entry numbers are low in some sections, and "Novice" and "Open" divisions are
combined, the "Open" competitors will not incur any penalty points, but results gained by "Novice" competitors
will be upgraded for Grading purposes only - (as has been donesince 2008) 17
YEARS AND OVER GRACEFUL SECTION NOVICE ♦ ALL "16
Year Novice" competitors in 2009 will move into "17 Years & Over Novice" for 12 months . If they gain at
least 10 points in 2010, they will be eligible to move to the Open Reserve section in 2011. ♦ "16 Year
Open" competitors who gained less than 10 points in 2009, will compete in "17 Years & Over Novice" for
12 months. If they gain at least 10 points in 2010, they will be eligible to move into the Open Reserve section in 2011. ♦ Any Open Reserve competitors who did not gain placings in 2008 or 2009 will compete in the Novice section.
If they gain at least 10 points in 2010, they will be eligible to compete in the Open Reserve section in 2011. ♦
Any soloists competing for the first time in the "17 Year and Over" section will be placed in Novice. OPEN
RESERVE ♦ 16 Years Open competitors who gained more than 10 points in 2009. ♦
17 Years & Over Novice competitors who gained 10 points in 2009. ♦ 17 Years & Over Open competitors
who did not qualify for the Royal South Street Final in 2008 or 2009, and/or did not gain 10 points in 2008 or 2009. OPEN ♦ Competitors who qualified for the Royal South Street Final in 2008 or 2009 and/or gained at least 10 points
