Recruitment and Retention

Recruitment in sport focuses on attracting new members, coaches, and volunteers, while retention emphasises engaging, developing, and keeping current participants through positive experiences and culture. While recruitment fuels growth, retention is crucial for sustainability.

Club Recruitment Strategies

To successfully recruit new members clubs should use a mix of community outreach and online marketing. Knowing your local community demographics through resources such as Census data helps to ensure that your message is inline with the needs of the community.

Community and School Outreach
  • Trial classes: Allowing potential new members to come an experience a class for free is a low-stakes way for people to see if your club is right for them.
  • Open days: Host free, fun open days where beginners can try the sport without commitment in a stress free environment.
  • School partnerships: Run introductory sessions or distribute flyers through local primary and secondary school newsletters.
  • Local business ties: Put up posters or leave brochures at community centers, libraries, and partnered local shops.
  • Re-engagement: Reach out to previous members and encourage them to get back involved in calisthenics with your club.
Digital and Social Presence
  • Active website: Keep your class timetable, registration links, and practice locations easy to find.
  • Social media highlights: Post fun action shots, engaging stories, and club culture highlights rather than just sign-up notices.
  • Referral rewards: Encourage current members to bring a friend by offering small perks like fee vouchers or merch discounts.
Ethical Recruitment in Sport

Ethical recruitment in sports clubs is important because it ensures all recruitment are conducted in a fair, transparent, and respectful manner that prioritises participant safety, equal opportunity, and inclusion. It involves preventing discrimination, protecting young and vulnerable participants from exploitation, and discouraging inappropriate poaching practices that can undermine individual wellbeing, team culture, and relationships between clubs. By upholding ethical recruitment practices, clubs strengthen their integrity, build community trust, and support the long-term development and sustainability of grassroots and amateur sport.

Ethical recruitment should:

  • Be values focused: recruitment practices should alignment with the club values rather than a "win at all cost" mentality.
  • Involving families: For youth recruitment, ensure parents or guardians are fully informed, included in discussions, and never pressured. Clubs / Coaches should never approach children or reach out to children directly online.
  • Be respectful and honest: Provide professional and honest respondes to enquiries, ensuring you are not making promises that you are unable to keep.
  • Anti-Poaching: Respect demographic boundaries and lower-division club development. Poaching undermines the foundational integrity, community trust, and developmental focus of grassroots and amateur sports.
